Home security has changed completely in the last few years — and not always for the better. The good news is that smart, simple, well-sited equipment now does more than the elaborate hardwired systems of ten years ago. I fit the kit, set it up properly, and tell you what's actually worth having.
What home security looks like in 2025
Most of the home security work I do in Suffolk now is around smart, Wi-Fi-connected kit: video doorbells (Ring, Eufy, Reolink), wireless cameras inside and out, smart locks, motion-triggered floodlights, and small standalone alarm sensors that send notifications to a phone. The advantages over the old hardwired systems are huge: easier installation, lower cost, no annual monitoring contract necessary, and you can actually see and hear what's going on at the front door from anywhere in the world.
The disadvantages are real too. Wi-Fi cameras only work when the broadband works. Cloud storage often comes with subscription fees that nobody mentions at the till. Some cheaper imported brands have terrible privacy histories and I won't fit them. And finally, a camera by itself doesn't deter anyone — it's only useful as part of a wider sensible setup.
Cameras and video doorbells, fitted and configured
For most Suffolk family homes, the right starting point is a video doorbell at the front door, one outdoor camera covering the back garden, and decent motion-triggered floodlights at the rear. That's a sensible base layer that costs a few hundred pounds total and genuinely does deter opportunist intruders, parcel thieves and dodgy door-to-door callers.
I'll fit the equipment, drill cleanly through walls (with proper sleeves and external sealant), get the Wi-Fi signal tested at the camera location before final fix, set up the app on your phone, walk you through the notification settings so you don't get spammed by every passing fox, and demonstrate how to share footage with the police if it ever needs to come to that.
Lighting, sensors and traditional alarms
Motion-triggered LED floodlights (PIR sensor based) are still the single most effective bit of security kit you can fit and they're cheap. Mounted at the right height (around 2.4 metres) and angled correctly so they don't trigger on next door's cat, they cover the back garden, the side passage and the front drive. I fit, wire (within Part P scope alongside an electrician where needed), and set the sensitivity properly.
I also fit small standalone door and window contact sensors that integrate with smart hubs, internal motion sensors, smoke and carbon monoxide alarms (mains-wired or battery-only depending on the property), and traditional bell-box alarm systems where a client specifically wants one.
Smart locks and physical security
Smart locks (Yale Linus, Ultion Smart, Nuki) have come a long way and are now a sensible upgrade for many Suffolk homes — particularly for owners with cleaners, dog walkers or rental guests who'd otherwise need physical key handovers. I fit them properly with a backup mechanical key, test the alignment carefully (smart locks expose any drift in the door alignment immediately), and walk you through the user setup.
On physical security: a good five-lever mortice deadlock and a decent anti-snap euro cylinder on the front door does more to keep an opportunist out than any amount of smart kit. Where the existing locks are clearly dated I'll flag it and offer to upgrade them as part of the visit.
Honest advice without sales pressure
I don't take referral fees from any security brand and I don't have a quota to push particular kit. If your existing setup is fine, I'll say so and not invent extras. Equally, if a client asks for kit that's genuinely poor value (the door peephole cameras with month-long batteries, for example), I'll explain why and suggest something better. The aim is sensible coverage, not a bigger bill.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a monitored alarm in Suffolk?
Most domestic clients don't need monitoring. A loud bell-box and good lighting plus a couple of cameras is enough deterrent for typical opportunist crime. Monitoring makes more sense for businesses or remote properties.
Will the cameras work in the dark?
Yes — modern outdoor cameras have infrared night vision, and most also have full-colour night vision with a small built-in spotlight that triggers on motion.
Do you do hardwired CCTV systems?
I can fit small POE-based systems with a recorder for clients who want footage stored locally rather than on the cloud. For larger commercial systems I work with a specialist.
Can you fit a camera if I don't have a power source nearby?
Yes — battery-only cameras work fine for many positions, and solar panel options are available for high-use locations. Or I can run a fused spur from a nearby socket.
Will my Wi-Fi be strong enough?
I'll test signal strength at the proposed camera location before mounting. If it's borderline, a cheap Wi-Fi extender or mesh node usually solves it — far better than discovering the issue after install.
