"Repainted the front of our Thoroughfare property properly — prep first, two coats of the right paint. Looks great a year on."
— Karen H., HalesworthHandyman Halesworth
A handsome small town in the Blyth valley with a lively cultural scene, a good market, the well-restored Halesworth & Blyth Valley Cinema and a long tradition of independent retailers.
About my work in Halesworth
Halesworth is a friendly town and the work here reflects that — most of my customers come back, often more than once, and many recommend me to their neighbours. The mix of Victorian shopfronts, Georgian houses on the Thoroughfare, Victorian terraces around the station and modern homes on the edge of town keeps the work varied. I cover the whole of Halesworth and the Blyth-valley villages around it for carpentry, plumbing, painting, fencing, gardens and the routine repairs and improvements every house needs. Send me an email with a description of the job and I'll come back to you with an honest opinion.
A short history of Halesworth
Halesworth grew up where an important medieval road crossed the River Blyth. It was given a market charter in 1222, and the Thoroughfare — the long, partly pedestrianised main street — has hosted trading every week since. The town's eighteenth-century prosperity came partly from malting and brewing along the river, and partly from being a stop on the route from Yarmouth to the Suffolk interior. The Blyth Navigation, a short canal completed in 1761, briefly connected Halesworth to the coast at Southwold and brought yet more trade.
The Halesworth and District Museum sits inside the old railway station, and the surviving Patrick Stead Hospital building on the edge of town is a fine piece of Victorian philanthropy. The Cut, a cleverly converted maltings, is now a thriving arts centre with a theatre, galleries and a popular café; it gives Halesworth a cultural pull well beyond what its size would suggest. The town has consistently been named one of the friendliest in the country in retail surveys, helped by an unusual abundance of independent shops, butchers, bakers and bookshops along the Thoroughfare. Modern Halesworth is a calm, creative place with a young population alongside the older one. Many of the buildings have Victorian shopfronts on top of older timber-framed structures, and they need careful, knowledgeable hands when something starts to creak.

Halesworth handyman FAQs
Do you work on the Thoroughfare properties in Halesworth?
Yes — the Thoroughfare and the streets just off it are full of Georgian and Victorian shopfronts and the residential floors above them. Sash repairs, plaster patching and careful repainting are bread-and-butter work for me here.
Are you insured to work on my home in Halesworth?
Yes. I carry full public liability insurance and can email a copy of the certificate before any work starts. For any gas or notifiable electrical work I bring in Gas Safe and NICEIC-registered contacts so the right paperwork sits behind the job.
Do you charge a call-out fee in Halesworth?
No call-out fee for jobs I can quote and complete the same visit. For longer or more complex work I'll come and look first, and that visit is free within the Halesworth area.
How quickly can you start a job in Halesworth?
Small repairs and odd jobs in Halesworth I can usually fit in within the same week. Larger projects — kitchens, bathrooms, decorating a whole room — generally need two to four weeks of notice depending on the time of year.
