About my work in Southwold
Working in Southwold is mostly a pleasure. The Georgian-and-Victorian centre, with its painted brickwork and crisp greens, is one of the most photographed parts of Suffolk, and the proximity of the sea makes for some lovely walks between jobs. The downside is that the salt and the wind do a lot of damage. Sash windows, front doors, gates, fences, fascias, render and seafront railings all need regular attention. I cover Southwold and the surrounding villages — Reydon, Walberswick, Wangford, Blythburgh — for carpentry, painting, fencing, plumbing, gardens and the steady stream of small repairs that coastal properties always need.
A short history of Southwold
Southwold sits on a low cliff between the sea and the marshes of the River Blyth. Almost the whole town was destroyed by a great fire in 1659, and what was rebuilt afterwards is the harmonious mix of greens, gables and white-painted brick that has made Southwold famous. Because the rebuilding was deliberately spread out, with several open greens left between the houses as fire-breaks, the town has an unusually airy feel that sets it apart from any other Suffolk place.
The lighthouse, built in 1887 in the middle of the town, is a startling vertical of white set among the rooftops. The pier is a relatively modern piece of seaside playfulness, with a beautifully eccentric Tim Hunkin water-clock and a 'Pavilion' of small attractions. Adnams Brewery, founded in the town in 1872, still operates from the high street and is a major part of local employment and identity. The parish church of St Edmund is one of the great wool churches of Suffolk and contains the famous fifteenth-century painted figure of Southwold Jack, a soldier who strikes a bell to mark the start of services. Modern Southwold is a small, expensive, much-loved seaside town that fills with second-home owners and visitors in summer and goes pleasantly quiet in winter. Salt and damp do their slow work on every front door and sash window here, which means I'm in Southwold and on its surrounding cliffs fairly regularly.
