About my work in Kesgrave
Kesgrave's neat 1950s-onwards estates are exactly the kind of housing where a regular handyman comes in useful. Family bathrooms that need updating, kitchens that have aged out, fences that the last storm shook loose, garages whose doors no longer close, and the steady drip of small jobs that any home generates: all of this is meat-and-potatoes work for me, and Kesgrave gives me plenty of it. A short history of Kesgrave
Kesgrave was, until startlingly recently, simply a quiet hamlet on the heath east of Ipswich. The old All Saints Church is medieval — small, simple, with a thatched roof and a tiny round tower — and it is now reached down a country lane that feels far away from the modern town surrounding it. For most of recorded history Kesgrave's population was in the hundreds, scattered across the sandlings heath alongside grazing flocks. That changed dramatically in the twentieth century.
Beginning in the 1930s, and accelerating after the Second World War, large estates of family homes were built on what had been heath and farmland. By the 1980s Kesgrave was effectively a continuous suburb of Ipswich, although it retained — and still retains — its own parish identity, schools and shopping centre at Heath Road. In 2000 it was granted town status, the youngest town in Suffolk. Kesgrave High School has been a particular focus of local pride and is one of the largest comprehensives in the county. The Dobbs Lane estates and the more recent Grange Farm developments have given the town a young population and, in places, a strikingly suburban feel. Most of the housing stock is post-war, which means the work I'm asked for here is the bread and butter of any handyman: kitchens and bathrooms, fences, garage conversions, decorating and the steady stream of small jobs that family homes generate.
