"Sympathetic sash window repair on our High Street property. Knew exactly what the building needed."
— Margaret R., Needham MarketHandyman Needham Market
A long, narrow town on the Gipping with a single, beautifully proportioned high street and one of the finest hammerbeam roofs in England inside its parish church.
About my work in Needham Market
Needham Market's long single high street is full of properties that ask for careful work — the timber-framed and Georgian houses along it are often listed, with all the sash repair, lath-and-plaster patching and gentle re-decoration that this implies. The estates off it, particularly around the lake and out toward Barking and Stowupland, keep me equally busy with kitchens, bathrooms, fencing, gardens and the small repairs that family life generates. I cover the whole of Needham Market and the Gipping-valley villages around it. Get in touch by email and I'll come back to you with a written quote.
A short history of Needham Market
Needham Market was for centuries a chapel-of-ease to the larger village of Barking up on the hill, but it had its own market by the thirteenth century and grew steadily as a small trading place on the road from Ipswich to Stowmarket. The town runs along a single long high street, which still has a remarkably consistent character — a calm sequence of timber-framed and Georgian fronts, with very few jarring modern intrusions. Plague in 1665 devastated the town, and a chain across the road at each end is said to have been used to seal the place off until the disease had passed.
The parish church of St John the Baptist hides a remarkable surprise behind its plain exterior: a double hammerbeam roof carved in the late fifteenth century that is widely considered one of the most impressive in the country. Pevsner called it 'the climax of English roof construction'. The Gipping Valley itself runs immediately east of the town, and the river — once busy with barge traffic on the Stowmarket Navigation — now offers a gentle riverside walk. Needham Lake is a popular family spot just outside the centre. The town's modern role is as a commuter base for Ipswich, with a useful station on the Ipswich-Cambridge line. Many of the older houses are listed and ask for sensitive trade work; the surrounding new-build estates ask for the more everyday range, and I cover both.

Needham Market handyman FAQs
Do you work on the listed properties on Needham Market High Street?
Yes. Many of the High Street properties are listed and I take on careful, sympathetic repairs and decorations. I'm familiar with the planning process at Mid Suffolk and I'll tell you up front if a job needs consent.
Do you charge a call-out fee in Needham Market?
No call-out fee for jobs I can quote and complete the same visit. For longer or more complex work I'll come and look first, and that visit is free within the Needham Market area.
How quickly can you start a job in Needham Market?
Small repairs and odd jobs in Needham Market I can usually fit in within the same week. Larger projects — kitchens, bathrooms, decorating a whole room — generally need two to four weeks of notice depending on the time of year.
Do you supply materials or do I?
Either works. For small jobs in Needham Market I'll bring everything with me. For larger projects most clients prefer to buy materials themselves so they can choose colours and brands; I'm happy to give a sensible shopping list and pick things up on your behalf if that's easier.
