About my work in Woodbridge
Woodbridge is a town I'm always pleased to drive to. The combination of the river, the Tide Mill, the Edwardian shops on the Thoroughfare and the listed houses up the hill makes for a lovely working environment, and the variety of buildings keeps the work interesting. I cover the whole of Woodbridge plus Melton, Bredfield, Hasketon and the surrounding villages for general handyman jobs, carpentry, plumbing, painting, fencing, gardens, kitchens, bathrooms and the smaller repairs that older houses always need. Whether you live near the quay or up on Pytches Road, I'm a short drive away and happy to come and have a look.
A short history of Woodbridge
Woodbridge has been a port since Saxon times, taking advantage of the wide, sheltered tidal estuary of the River Deben. Its Tide Mill, working from at least the twelfth century, ground flour right up to 1957 and is now restored as a museum where the wheel turns each tide. The town's prosperity was built on shipbuilding — Edward III's fleet for the Battle of Sluys in 1340 included Woodbridge ships, and Sir Robert Hitcham's almshouses on the hill still mark the town's long relationship with seafaring wealth.
On the far side of the river lies Sutton Hoo, the great Anglo-Saxon royal burial ground discovered in 1939 by Basil Brown. The treasures unearthed from the seventh-century ship burial — most famously the helmet, now in the British Museum — completely rewrote what historians thought they knew about the period. The site is now beautifully cared for by the National Trust and a major day out for visitors to the area. Woodbridge itself has a delightful market square, an unusual brick church tower, the Riverside Theatre, and a string of yacht and boat builders along the quays. Its independent shopkeepers and restaurants give it a slightly bigger feel than its size suggests. A great many of the houses are listed, with all the careful trade work that implies — and a lot of garden gates, decking and timber boats in between.

Yes — much of central Woodbridge from the Thoroughfare down to the Tide Mill is conservation area and many properties are listed. I'm familiar with the East Suffolk Council planning process and work sympathetically with traditional materials.
Do you supply materials or do I?
Either works. For small jobs in Woodbridge I'll bring everything with me. For larger projects most clients prefer to buy materials themselves so they can choose colours and brands; I'm happy to give a sensible shopping list and pick things up on your behalf if that's easier.
Will you tidy up after the job?
Always. I leave the house cleaner than I found it, and any waste leaves with me. Bigger strip-outs go to a licensed transfer station and the disposal is itemised on your invoice so there are no surprises.
