About my work in Felixstowe
Working a few streets from the seafront does odd things to a property. Felixstowe houses get more wind and more salt than almost anywhere else in Suffolk, and I see the consequences every week — peeling render, blown sashes, lifted roof tiles, rotten gateposts and the kind of garden fences that have decided to lean north-west whether you want them to or not. I cover the whole of Felixstowe, from the seafront and Old Felixstowe down to the Trimleys and Walton, for general handyman work, carpentry, painting, plumbing, fencing, gardening and the steady stream of small repairs that coastal living seems to need.
A short history of Felixstowe
Felixstowe has lived two completely different lives. For most of the nineteenth century it was a small fishing village; then in the 1880s a railway line and a deliberate piece of resort planning by Colonel George Tomline turned it into a fashionable Edwardian spa. The town gained its grand Spa Pavilion, a long promenade, ornamental gardens and rows of red-brick villas above the cliff. The Empress of Germany visited in 1891, which was thought to be very glamorous indeed; less happily, in 1953 the great east-coast flood inundated much of the seafront and tragically claimed lives in the Langer Road area.
The port is the other half of the story. Felixstowe has been Britain's busiest container port since the 1960s, and the towering blue cranes of Trinity Terminal are visible for miles. Forty per cent of the country's container trade passes through here. Yet the resort half of the town still works hard at being a resort: the seafront has been beautifully replanted in recent years, two piers reach out over the shingle, and the beach huts are some of the prettiest on the east coast. Felixstowe Ferry, just up the road, is a wonderful tucked-away boatyard hamlet at the mouth of the Deben. Salt air being what it is, properties here ask a lot of their woodwork and ironwork; gates, fascias and window frames give me steady work along the front.

Why does my Felixstowe woodwork rot so quickly?
Salt-laden air, prevailing south-westerlies and the high humidity off the docks all attack timber. Painting with an oil-based primer and a quality micro-porous topcoat, and replacing rather than patching cills that have softened beyond saving, will give you many more years of service than a quick cover-up will.
Can you replace fence panels along Felixstowe seafront roads?
Yes — coastal fencing needs concrete posts and pressure-treated panels secured to handle the gusts. I source the heavy-duty grades and set posts to a proper depth so the fence still stands the next time a storm rolls in.
Do you supply materials or do I?
Either works. For small jobs in Felixstowe I'll bring everything with me. For larger projects most clients prefer to buy materials themselves so they can choose colours and brands; I'm happy to give a sensible shopping list and pick things up on your behalf if that's easier.
Will you tidy up after the job?
