Driveways done properly cost more upfront and less long-term

The biggest single mistake on residential driveways is skimping on the sub-base. A block paving driveway looks the same on day one whether the sub-base is 50mm of sand or 150mm of compacted MOT Type 1 hardcore. Within two years, though, the difference is dramatic. The shortcut driveway sinks where vehicles park, weeds push up between the blocks, and within five years the whole thing needs lifting and relaying. The proper driveway, built on a solid base with adequate depth and proper drainage, looks great for 25 years.

That's the trade-off I explain to every Suffolk client. A proper job costs more upfront. It's the only one that's actually cheaper in the long run.

Block paving driveways and patios

Block paving is the most common driveway material across Suffolk for good reason — it's hardwearing, repairable in spots if anything fails, available in a huge range of colours and patterns, and SUDS-compliant if laid with permeable joints. A typical small driveway is 25-40 square metres and takes a small team about a week from start to finish: excavation, edge restraint, sub-base, screed, blocks, jointing sand, and a final wash.

Material choice matters. The 50mm Marshalls Drivesett, Brett or Tobermore concrete blocks are the workhorses — tough, attractive and reasonably priced. Clay pavers cost more but hold their colour for the life of the driveway. Permeable blocks (with built-in drainage gaps) are increasingly required by planning for new driveways above a certain area.

Resin-bound driveways — the modern alternative

Resin-bound surfacing has become very popular across Suffolk over the last few years, and rightly so. It's a single-piece surface (no joints to weed up), permeable (so doesn't trigger planning requirements for surface water disposal), available in a wide range of natural-looking aggregate colours, and very low-maintenance.

It is more expensive than block paving (per square metre), and it does need an absolutely solid base — either properly-prepared concrete or a thick stable tarmac sub-base. Skipping that base preparation is the one thing that ruins resin driveways, because once the resin's down it can't be lifted in sections to fix.

Gravel, tarmac and traditional surfaces

Gravel driveways are a Suffolk classic and still the right answer for many rural and country properties — particularly conservation areas where block paving would look wrong. Done properly with a permeable membrane, edge restraint, and the right grade of decorative aggregate, a gravel drive lasts decades with only an occasional top-up. I lay them on Bodpave or similar grid systems for the working area to stop the gravel migrating into ruts under regular vehicle use.

Tarmac (asphalt) driveways are the right answer for longer driveways where block paving would be prohibitively expensive. Modern hot-laid tarmac with a proper sub-base will give you 15-20 years of service. Cheap cold-lay 'patch' tarmac sold by door-step operators is essentially worthless and falls apart within a year — please don't fall for it.

Patios, paths and garden paving

The same principles apply to patios. The right depth of base, proper falls for water (1:80 minimum away from the house), the correct slab spacing and pointing material, and an honest material choice for the budget. I lay Indian sandstone, porcelain paving, riven concrete, granite setts and traditional York stone (subject to availability and budget — reclaimed York is gorgeous but increasingly expensive).
