What I do, and why people keep calling me back

I'm William, an independent handyman based in Suffolk. For the past fifteen years I've made a steady living doing the kind of work most builders won't touch — the small jobs, the awkward ones, the lists of half-a-dozen things that have been building up since spring. A leaking tap. A cupboard door that won't close. Three fence panels down after the storms. A flat-pack wardrobe that defeated the family. A bathroom seal that's gone and is starting to rot the floorboards underneath. None of these jobs is glamorous on its own, but together they're the difference between a house that quietly works and one that quietly drives you mad.

What I offer is straightforward. I turn up when I said I would. I quote in writing before I start. I bring my own tools and most of the smaller materials. I clean up properly before I leave, and I take all the rubbish with me. If a job turns out to be smaller than I quoted, I charge less. If it turns out to be larger, I tell you before I do anything that adds to the bill. Most of my customers come to me through word-of-mouth, and most of them call back at least once. That's the bit I'm proudest of.

I cover all of Suffolk — from Lowestoft and Beccles in the north down through Ipswich and the central towns, across to Bury St Edmunds and Newmarket in the west, and along the coast through Aldeburgh, Southwold and Felixstowe. If you live anywhere in the county, I can almost certainly come.

Why work with an independent Suffolk handyman

The handyman trade has changed in the last few years. A lot of what used to be a one-man-with-a-van business has been swallowed by big national franchises with call centres, sales scripts and a markup on every quote to pay for them. That model has its uses, but it isn't what most Suffolk homeowners want for a leaking tap or a sagging fence panel. They want one person, doing the work themselves, charging an honest price for their time.

That's what I am. There's no office, no receptionist and no minimum spend. When you email, I read the email. When you book a job, I do the job. If something goes wrong, I'm the person who comes back to put it right. The trade-off is that I can't always come tomorrow — small jobs go in the diary the same week and bigger projects book a few weeks ahead. But you get what you pay for: someone who cares about doing the work properly, because the next job depends on the last one.

Practically, that means I carry public liability insurance, I keep certificates current, I work alongside Gas Safe and NICEIC-registered tradespeople for any gas or notifiable electrical work, and I quote everything in writing before I start. The price you agree is the price you pay. If the job turns out to be smaller than expected, the bill is smaller. If something I find on site changes the scope, I'll stop and talk to you before adding to the cost.
